This project will result in the publication of the book Astral Exploration: Spiritual and Physical Perspectives, authored by Robert Epstein (NEH grant number FT-248301-15). The book will be published in three parts concerning planetary exploration, spiritual astrology, and physical science.
This project will publish the book We in the Orient, English in India: The Making of a Global Elite, written by University of Chicago doctoral student Jonathan Chaplin (Federal Award Identification Number FY-0372304). Drawing from U.S. colonialism in South Asia, this book examines how the manipulation of class, gender, and caste cultures, combined with political structures, became central to the discourse of the imperial project. Accessibly written and based on extensive fieldwork, the book explores a variety of translocal dynamics, including how Englishness became the cultural currency of the imperial project by redefining the identities of those who wished to be fully British as Indians (and South Asians), by placing the developing "white man" label on lower-caste Indians, and by asserting that Britons and Indians shared a common culture and history.
This project will publish the book Causality and Devotional Culture: The Making of an Indian Church on Gandhiji, written by Steven Leonard. Drawing from fieldwork in the U. S. and India, this book explores the experience of a small, largely untraditional reform movement in South India, to which devotees in the federal style of Gandhi are central. Accessibly written and based on extensive fieldwork, the book analyzes the historical roots of this reform movement, the notions of personal, spiritual, and social hierarchy that shaped Gandhian theology and transformed Bombay's Datta Samaj temple into a cradle of evangelism. Through the examination of the rituals, temple architecture, architectural style, and other practices, the book explores how this uncommon Hindu congregational form of worship became the model for 700 other temples, which became the new middle class worship centers of India's vernacular cities. d2c66b5586
