The key with the upper respiratory system is to keep the mucus membranes moving and liquifying to prevent congestion. Any heat applied to the body especially the lungs during any kind of congestion is helpful.

Drinking warm fluids and exposing the body to high heat, red light or steam helps break down mucus where viruses, bacteria and pathogens like to live. Viruses can not survive in heat. And the less mucus that gets stuck in the body, the less time the virus can survive.

The major passages and structures of the upper respiratory tract include the nose or nostrils, nasal cavity, mouth, throat (pharynx), and voice box (larynx). The respiratory system is lined with a mucous membrane that secretes mucus. The mucus traps smaller particles like pollen or smoke.
